Mastering the art of driving on the Autobahn is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience on Germany's famous highway system. Here are some crucial rules and courtesies to keep in mind:

Lane Discipline

The golden rule of Autobahn driving is to keep right except when overtaking. This practice ensures smooth traffic flow and allows faster vehicles to pass safely. Always return to the right lane after overtaking, even if you're driving at high speeds.

Overtaking Procedures

When overtaking, use your indicators well in advance and check your mirrors carefully. Remember that vehicles may approach from behind at much higher speeds than you might expect. Never overtake on the right – it's both prohibited and dangerous.

Speed Awareness

While some sections of the Autobahn have no speed limits, it's crucial to drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions. Be prepared for sudden speed limit changes, especially near urban areas or construction zones. The recommended speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit) is 130 km/h (81 mph), even on unrestricted sections.

Maintain Safe Distances

Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. A good rule of thumb is to maintain a 3-second gap, which should be increased in poor weather conditions or when driving at higher speeds.
